Greetings Everyone!
I'm very much looking forward to diving into the game. I have been very interested in space-themed games in the past and was unaware what great games there were out there other than EVE. I spend many hours reading reviews and the guides before deciding this was a great game for me.
I was also under the impression that this was mostly a single player game, but I see that it is widely multiplayer. In this regard, I have a question. I am currently in Afghanistan, and the internet is pretty spotty most time. We have an average 10-15% packet loss and our average ping is between 500-600.
With some moderate lag, are my controls delayed at all? Is it possible to play unaffected by bits of lag (will enemy ships freeze and then fly by me or destroy me in an instant of lag)? I could not play BSGO here due to the delay in controls (try to fly left and it takes a second to actually go left, making fighting near impossible), granted that is a browser-based game.
In any case, I'll play single player if I have to, but really would like to jump into the community if at all possible.
Cheers!
Greetings from a new pilot!

From what I understand, Lag doesn't affect your controls. And if you are fighting AI, it shouldn't matter. However PvP is where lag really comes into play.
If you are lagging, your opponent will seem to teleport all over the place and you might seem to do the same to your opponent. The reason is the server tells the game where the opponent is, so the game puts a ship there. When the next packet comes through from the server the game moves the ship to the position reported by the server. If you are getting a lot of packet loss, it can make PvP (Player versus Player) unplayable.
I haven't seen that here, but I have on other games, most notably Freelancer.
With that much packet loss, you might not be able to PvP, but you should still be able to talk to others and get some good advice.
Hope this helps.

I play with high ping but I don't have that packet loss.
It will be just fine as long as you are in a sector by yourself with no other players.
When others in same sector my guess is with that packet loss you will notice it.
Might get some warping and jumping around. Controls should be fine though.
It might still be playable.
one way to find out , jump online and test. : )
If you are starting as new pilot and are in Sapphire at 0,0,0, with lots of other new pilots in same sector,
might be a good idea to jump to a nearby station a few sectors away from other players.
Tilde key ~ will show player list and their sector locations.
