Using Atmo for High Velocity Deceleration

Post by Cargo »

In this little guide I'll explain how you can use a planet's atmosphere to decelerate from any velocity and then land on the surface safely.

1. Rightclick the planet in your navmap to get a distance readout on your HUD.
Note: this is the distance to the planet's center, you will enter it's gravity at 50k and atmosphere shortly after that.
Image

2. Line up with the target, engage IDS and Afterburner.
Image

3. Still accelerating
Image

4. When you get within 51k, switch to Inertia Mode and pull up, putting most of your speed on your downward drift.
Forward velocity cannot exceed 1450*.
Image

5. Make sure your Set Speed under 1450 as well
Image

6. Your downward velocity starts slowing as soon as you hit atmo
Image

7. Deceleration burn continues, note that my shields and hull are unaffected
Image

8. Burn ends, at this point you can engage IDS and keep flying
Image

9. Or stay in Inertial and drop
Image

10. In Inertial you can fall from any altitude and you will land safely and automatically
Image

11. Have lunch with the best view on the planet
Image

*with a Shield Recharger installed you can maintain a forward velocity of 1550, you will be on fire but you will be safe.

Really good stuff there Auto Jack! I'm going to try that out myself. I once found that to be a good tactic to escape from another player (he burned up in the atmoshpere :D), but I never had it down to that kind of precision (I almost burned up myself!). Also fantastic screenshots... would be nice to see that on video.

But this time, the atmosphere starts at 350000 instead of 165000, so be careful.

Good point, in the expansion start pulling up at 51k away from the planet.

Glad to hear Splosives! :) You know, my board of directors think a partnership between CFH Industries and the fine minds employed by SplosiveCorp would be a highly beneficial arrangement for both companies!

Is it true that your two Enterprises are going to have an "open data" policy? Or will we researchers have to pay to subscribe? :D

A lot of our research at SplosivesCorp is available for free, however, there's more valuable research that is only available for certain people.

Thanks Cargo for reviving this thread! Did you post it originally? Did you change your name?

Anyway, I read about this, but I didn't know hoe to do it properly, now I know!
