Finding New Stars Systems Planets etc...

Post by ausraider »

I've been doing the long haul from Sirius to Sol.
Thankfully I have a Mantis drive so although it will be long, not too long hopefully.

From browsing the forum, I've picked up a couple of things, or rumours,

Apparently, to discover new planets or stars etc, one suggestion is to watch for light reflections.
However in the vast emptiness this seems like a bit of a wild shot if you're trying to set the JD to go in a particular direction.

I read about some guys installable Explorer assistant somewhere but I can't find a link.

A Couple of questions:

1.
When in deep space - ala the long run from Sirius to Sol,
If I look around at star filled space, I notice one or 2 pinhead stars seem abit brighter than all the others. Does this mean that said star is somewhat closer than all the others, and how should I go about travelling to it?

2.
Occasionally, along the way from Sirius to Sol, I would happen upon the odd wayfarer. mostly friendly but sometimes hostile?
Are these simply random - generated by the game, or do they indicate the presence of a hidden planet or station etc nearby - I mean relatively near by?

About 2/3rds of the way there , I also noticed the Nav Panel indicated I was in the system 'Mercury'.......?
But could see nothing on the NavMap maxed out.

Ausraider.

PS: I should say this is Single Player.

Atollskis Navdata program is available at this download location.

http://evochron.junholt.se/menus/downloads.htm

It is a very useful and handy program.
I use this for my rather large maplog. Having a large maplog in the game slows my frame rate to the single digits when I open nav console. : (

If you are going to try looking for reflections of light etc.. keep the default cockpit on.

I wouldn't worry about those pinhead stars that seem a bit brighter than others.
When a star is within range to point towards you can see it on the default cockpit a long time before is clearly visible in the sky.

 The Nav Map will display the name of the closest planet. Even if that planet is many sectors away. Going from Sirius to the Sol system, the name will change at the halfway point.

Thanks for confirming that Marvin.

The Milky Way looks cool, btw - great sense of hope when it appears after empty space.
Venus is somewhat unnerving...

I'll say nada about the rest, so I don't spoil...

PS: If somebody could point me to a thread with the ship/cockpit reflection method described....
I'm not sure what to be looking for - ship reflections or cockpit or what...?

 If you watch the reflections inside your cockipit, you'll notice that sections of your console are illuminated according to the position of the closest star ... if the star is on your left, then the right-hand console is lit and if the front console is lit then it means the star is behind you. If you're far out in space, then you want to point your ship so that the front and both side consoles are darkened ... putting the nearest star in front of you.

Perfect!

Thanks again Marvin.

I guess with Atollskis Navdata program and that cockpit info, its as good as it can get for seeking out new worlds.
