I upgraded from a talon to a mirage, and from shield 1 to shield 4 (also equipping a shield boost x 4), and for some reason, my new beefier ship with better shields can't take more than 3 hits from particle weapons???

Someone able to explain to me why my new, more combat worthy ship, is so flimsy compared to the starter ship?

There is the possibility that since the talon is smaller and more agile than the mirage, more enemy shots are actually hitting you than before. Also, if you switched zones, there is the possibility that the enemy ships are stronger where you are at now.

:o I remember once when a pilot got a new ship but lost his shield generator ... whereby upgraded shields are useless.

everything is in tact, I still had a shield booster... I mean, I guess I may be a bit less agile, but the difference is ridiculous. Frustrating since I was looking forward to the better ship, and really just find myself disappointed and wanting to go back :P

 Shields aren't everything. And there is a mixture of Federation and Alliance ships. You need to compare all the specs.

specs don't seem all that different though, other than it has more assembly points. It's like the 4th ship on the list... more armor and more shields should mean I can take more damage from the same enemy :P

Each enemy you run into will or may have different equipment and or ship. Even with the best ship and best equipment they will destroy you if you let them.;)

If you are in the midst of the IMG Quest, I am betting that the quest took you to another system for the next mission right after you bought the new ship. Like stated, enemies can be a lot harder one system away. Also, they can be equipped with other more powerful weapons. Both of these things can make all the difference you are experiencing now. As far as I can see, this can be the only explanation to your 'problem'.

Nah, I stayed in the same system. Is it possible that the shield emitters do not scale with the size of the new ship? So even though I went up to a shield 4, my ship is big enough that to have the same shield protection it needs a shield 5, for example?

I'd think not, but you never know.

You may want to keep upgrading till you get the best shield possible as it can save you more than an engine or wing upgrade can.

If you do not want to die a lot get the Max shields available for your ship and maximum class shield boosters you can find then upgrade everything else you have room for from there! Make shure also that you put your energy power back to shields. You might have power diverted to weapons when in combat so your shields might be lowered and you seem to die quicker because of that!....;)
