Total noob question (Nav Map)

This is a very noob thing to ask which is daft since I've been playing a while.

But...

How do i use the navigation panel to get around to different sectors and the alike. I get that you can use gates, but in the older games your drive could take you across entire systems. Can the new game do this, and if so how do I set my navigation point to 'jump' to it in a different system?

I would appreciate the help as I'm currently sticking to one system for a while just so I can't go somewhere I can't get back from.

Sorry for the newbie question, but it's been a while since I played and everything is all so shiny and new!

The instructions also provide a good text based tutorial on navigation.

Yes THAT siege, back from a long break so long I forgot my login details got in yesterday and then managed to wipe the password from my laptop lol.

BTW the game runs surprisingly well on my naff old laptop. Just can't wait till new joystick arrives, playing on my keyboard is not so fun

use the zoom features and always check your rear view in the nav map
