Triangulation

I have noticed that it is possible to see certain planets from great distances. While searching for Pearl hidden, for instance, I was able to see it from several hundred sectors away from both the Unknown sector and the next one over.

Yes, I found it the long way...

Anywho, I was able to triangulate the position of the planet from a great distance, and use that to set up my auto pilot.

This would be great, except that I notice most planets go out of visual after only a few sectors. I'm suspecting that this is because of crossing system borders or other factors. Does anyone know what determines the distance from which a planet can be seen?

Also, are the huge nebula backdrops just eye candy? I've read that we can fly to everything, and I know there are ones that we can fly to. I'll probably try to calculate a distance to one tonight..

If you can see the nebula on the Nav map, then you can fly to it.

Well, unfortunately, it seems that the nebula do not lend them selves to triangulation, since I was unable to make a measurement after traveling 100 sectors. That would make them many thousands of sectors away.

Marvin I think he meant the skybox nebulas not the small nav map ones. Afaik the skybox is just a skybox.

Actually I like it.. not only does it look cool, but it helps me keep a sense of direction. I'm just bummed it isn't useful as a long range navigational aid.
