MP \"netiquette\" tips please

I'm thinking about dipping into the online games but don't want to end up stepping on anyone's toes through ignorance so what are the "rules" online?

For example how do you recognise if a human player is hostile or friendly (preferably before they start shooting at you!)?

I've seen mention of clans being able to take control of quadrants..... If this is the case hiw does a non affiliated player know whether they'll be supportive or resent his/ her presence?

I've read through the clan/ roleplay forum but am still unclear on these (and probably many other points I;ve not even thought of yet!). Is there a guide for this type of thing anywhere?

Most of the dangerous players have names that kind'a sound dangerous ... like "Romulan." If others are on line (including MMaggio, the voice of EM's main server), you'll usually get a warning as a hostile player starts to log on. And, yes there are clans and guilds ... open your quadrant map when on line and you should see a bunch of circles with tags top and bottom ... the top tag indicates the clan dominating that sector of the galaxy. Usually, they don't mind others entering their system ... unless the non-aligned pilot starts blowing things up.

When in doubt, ask (press "Enter" to open the chat window).

Doesn't matter much what you do in MP, you won't be stepping on anyones' toes. A couple might step on yours -

You can tell the human, from the AI players by their ID nics, you'll see it on the screen to your right. Human players can be red, yellow, or green. You can make a red one green (friendly - sorta) by targeting them and hitting the minus key on ur num pad. Same, if you join a clan, all of your clan will be green to you. You can also see the human nics on screen.

The human pilots, in MP, are mostly friendly. You won't get hordes of kill mad teenagers leaping all over you.

Jump in, you'll enjoy it, much better than solo SP. Welcome to the game, and the forum. See ya out there!

In Legends the minus key for linking only works for players with a clan tag....Is this different in Mercenary? If you do not have a clan tag in Legends you can not link with other players...

One last question guys.

Do you have seperate pilots for online and offline, or do you use the same pilot for both?

I'm having problems connecting to any servers at the moment (just posted in the relevent thread in the support forum) but I'm hoping to get things sorted out and online soon.

I use the same profiles. But, then, I only log on to MMaggio's Remula server.

Well, Mike runs a no-rules server, aside from offensive language. Which is fair enough, we have some youngsters online.

....and try not to "shield bump" another player while in dock. You might end up on someone's Kill On Sight roster!
