Best Way to improve military rank?

Trying to raise my military rank and I don't have a clue what it entails. I read you have to run military contracts, but what zones offer them? Should you max out civilian ran first b4 attempting the military side?

any of the warzones, these are the sectors with military carriers that you can dock at, I believe you can dock at either the carrier of the station ( if there is one there ) but to be safe just do them at the carrier. There is one in sapphire ( eratoII to be exact, though not really a war zone since there are no combat missions - sapphire being friendly and all), and sierra has possibly the most famous one out there, but there are a few around.

Best way is to log on to the B5 server and join in on co-op missions in any of the war zones. Stations and carriers will offer contracts ... 'though, if you're in a hurry, it's quicker to dock at a station. Also, in Sierra, if you accidently shoot up the good guys and turn them red, you can just move to a station in another sector instead of leaving the zone altogether.

Trainee.............0-4
Ensign..............5-24
LT J.G. .............25-49
LT ....................50-99
Lt. Commander..........100-149
Commander...............150-249
Captain......................250-499
Commodore...............500-749
Admiral.......................750-998
Fleet Admiral..............999

I got these figures from the Legends strategy Guide.....Hope this helps

No, you do not have to max out Civilian rank first. Although I started that way, because I wanted to explore and become familiar with all the aspects of the Evochron Systems where everything is and get some combat experience....etc....and when I could stand on my own I ventured in to millitary missions and rank because they are mostly combat related it helps to have some practice and experience doing civillian contracts....

How do you know which Quadrants are warzones? Also is there one that's geared for fresh pilots?

There is one gate to every Warzone in Sytems that have Warzones. There are 3 Warzones in 3 different Systems.
From Sierra look for Sierra Warzone Gate, form Talison look for Talison Warzone Gate, from Cerulean look for the Cerulean Warzone Gate......

So I'm able to get the Wraith now, but in doing so I lost my crew/cargo benefits and I can't tell the difference in performance. Is there more to a mil ship that I'm missing?

You betcha'!
Altho' it is true that military ships are single seat fighters and as such are not traders either and have no need for cargo space.
But...! They are considerably faster, more agile and superior in armor to any civillian ship, with the Wraith being the best of them all.
Spend a little more time in the cockpit and you will see the difference.

Try out the top two or three Military ships to see which handles best for your type of flying and don't be afraid of switching back and forth till you are really happy.

Well after somehow my game saved after I traded/built me a Wraith, I ran a few missions. Needless to say the Shields/handling/Weapon sytems were noticeably zippier compared to my ole Civvy frame. Skirmishes didn't last as long as before, it just pains me to see all that valuable antimatter drifting away. I was making a killing on clean-up on aisle 3s.

Yeah, it's a trade-off. But, if you find yourself running low on cash, you can always switch back to that old civvy ship for awhile and salvage some antimatter.

You can accept military contracts with your civilian ship and crew. Choose the best for you and shape your fortune!

If you want, you can easly return your civilian life.
