New Player, what to do

Just got the game a few days ago and have played quite a bit during my spare time. I've made my first million mostly mining and random contracts to vary up things. But here's my question, what else is there to do? Are there long-term "projects" or objectives I can set myself to? Basically, to the veterans of the game, what do you mostly do to occupy your play time?

Play multiplayer, join a clan, finish the quest, explore, upgrade your ship until you have a Star Destroyer, fight, basically do everything the game description tells you to do. This game is about the universe you are in, its size and scope. Just mining and doing random contracts misses the point.

There are many things to discover like secret places, profitable trade routes, high tech equipment sellers, uncharted systems, efficient use of your equipment...

Go to MP, there you'll can coop, race or fight with other pilots. Do military contracts to increase your military rank and buy the best military ships in the navy carriers. You can join or create a clan, claim systems, defend them, establish and apply your rules in them...

Feel free to play a role : independant trader, explorer, pirate, defender of the innocents, there are plenty of clans who will be glad to welcome you. Look at the roleplay/clan forum to see which one would fit to your favorite gameplay
