Does anyone know what setting controls the highlight brightness?
All the ships look ok when viewed from the dark side, but they're bleach white on the sunny side.

Looks like it may be your vid card settings, at least from the screenie in your post. I'm running the cap ship mod as well, and mine don't look like yours. Check that your vid card drivers are recent, and that your card has sufficent resources to handle the game "physics". Mercenaries is so much more vid-card intensive than any other of Vice's previous offerings. You may have to shell out a few ducats to upgrade your own equipment, in order to have that maximum Evochron experience.

That's Harris Mining Station in the Olympus System.
My current system specs are:
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M
4 GB RAM (3.4 GB effective)
Windows XP Pro SP3 (32-bit)
The video driver is the 175.97 WHQL that's recommended on dell.com's drivers page.
It's an old Dell D620.

I get the feeling you just don't have enough gpu power or vram to render everything in game properly. After just a quick search it looks like you've got onboard nvidia graphics inside a relatively old laptop. Not really and ideal setup for what you want to do.
My only suggestion would be to install nvidia's drivers (from their website), give that a try and you may see an improvement -- or you may not. Dell recommends that you install their drivers because they know most users will have few to no issues using it, even if it means functionality is disabled. I expect this to be especially true with your gpu since it's marketed as for use in "business graphics" which is a lot different than gaming.
You may also want to check and make sure you've got the latest DirectX installed.
Still, I just don't think your laptop has the muscle power needed to make EM look pretty.

There are two likely possibilities:
- You've installed a mod that has replaced the default textures with either invalid textures, or some kind of brightly colored texture. And for some reason, it's been applied to ship textures and asteroids. The custom capital ship suggests you have some form of mod(s) installed.
- More likely is your laptop lacks the required minimum shader support (and/or possible available video memory), resulting in any object that uses shaders to render improperly. Check to make sure your laptop supports shader model 2.0 minimum and meets the minimum video memory requirements.

None of the drivers hosted by nVidia support my card and I haven't been able to find an alternative driver elsewhere.
I'll blame it on the shoddy hardware for now. I removed the ships mod; the extreme highlights are still there, but less noticeable on the rounder, default ships. The asteroids still loose their proper textures after a bit of play time.
Thank you for all your suggestions.

Still using the 175.97 WHQL from dell.com
The 179.48 that nVidia directs me to for the card doesn't have the NVS 110M in the supported list and it returns an error saying it can't detect any supported hardware.
