Couple newbie questions

Post by Meneliki »

Hey guys,

Just a couple of questions I had after playing for a little while.

1) I noticed in the training video for building deployables/stations, it didn't appear to consume any resources or money.. once you have the constructor, are you able to "spam" stations/deployables?

2) Is it possible to own more than one ship? I noticed the hangar at many planets/stations... is it only for storing equipment? Or is there a way to have more than 1 ship and swap 'em out occaisionally? Also, if I put something in a hanger somewhere, is it ONLY there or will it appear anywhere? In other words, are the hangars linked or seperate?

Thanks

1) There is a set limit as to how many stations can be deployed in a given sector, the same goes for deployables except they tend to explode/scuttle themselves once you leave the sector. also stations/deployables do indeed cost money with the exception of the mining probe.

2) You can indeed own more than one ship by using the station/city hangars, the catch however is that you must be able to afford an exact copy of your current ship for it to be stored, and when changing between different ships, you can possibly lose crew members or equipment/missiles/cargo depending on how differently the ships have been configured.

as for accessing stored items from hangars other than the one used initially for storage, I'm not 100% sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but you can only access items from the station they were originally stored in.

 Yes, you can only retrieve stored items from the station where you stored them. Every once in awhile you'll be charged a storage fee and that fee shows up in Chat. If you forget where you stored something, you can press F3, click on the News section, and then click on the appropriate button at the bottom of the menu ... Chat will display a list of the stations and the items stored in each.

I have had a question regarding this. I once stored a mining beam in an FF trade station in Pearl. Later the station got destroyed, but in my news area it still lists the mining beam as being stored at the station.

So is that a glitch and can I fix it?

It sounds like a glitch and if it is then Vice might be able to fix that Pilot file if you ask him and send it to him.

 What Tbird said. If indeed you're still being charged for stuff stored in a destoyed station, Vice needs to look at the corresponding pilot profile ... 'cause (unless it's an old profile created pre-bugfix) it's a bug. What should've happened when you stored stuff at a player built station and then the station was destroyed ... is ... aydios stuff. No more fees at that demolished station. (Btw, did another station replace it?)

Just noticed the same thing is happening to me. I had a military frame stored in a player station that's been destroyed. It lists the item when I click 'hangar info' but I'm not sure that I'm being charged for it. I look to see if the charge is coming through tonight.

It might be wise to only store stuff in game generated stations - they can't be destroyed

:)

Having said that, I've got my own system with a nice trade route going and store bits 'n bobs in my stations ( . . . mine . . . .all mine . ... (imagine the cackling smug voice)); it's pretty safe because few even know where it is and even fewer (ie no-one to date) visit it

Yes Meneliki, there is a draw on your cash stash each time you build a structure and/or deploy a structure. The amount of the cash bash depends on the location in which said structures are built. (Good/Fair/Moderate/Hostile - each extract their tolls) Some trade stations I've built went for about 16K, while others I've built have hovered in the 320K - 350k ranges. As in any other real estate deal, it truely is: Location - Location - Location. ;)

Another thought impinges. Should you transfer between civ and mil frame-types, (store one - then use the other). Or, if you're converting to standardized mil frame from a pimped-out civ frame... Recall that the Shadow mil frame is the "lowest cost" mil frame that starts the 8-8 eqpt/secondary wpns slot options. It's a fairly useful frame, provided it has some "teeth". All ya gotta do is meet the minimum (LtJg) requirements. ;):cool:

Questions from a newb:

Is there a switch that can be added to the shortcut to bypass the intro video? (line a " /i" or something after the exe) I know I can hit the mouse button a stop it ... I just hate terminating a program that way if its avoidable.

Where can you buy the larger ships? Is there a particular system these can be bought if you have the credits?

I have not played multiplayer yet. At this point I just want to mine, explore and take jobs to make money. Can you do that in MP or is combat the main thing?

I will most likely have more questions soon but these are good for now.

I've had Merc for a week now and really like it. I've loaded a few mods and admire how clean the game is structured and how easy it is to add and remove mods.

My history with space sims has been within the last couple of years; I've played I-War, Freelancer, Freespace, Pioneer and OOlite. Plus I have Homeworld 2 and Haegemonia (not sims but fun).

There is a way to bypass the video ... but it's not a file I use. Until somebody comes along with the correct answer, you can simply press the Esc key.

Open your Navigation Console (default F1) and click on the Quadrant button on the right side. Then click on the Economy button ... the better ships can be found in the higher economy star systems.

In MP you can do just about anything you can do in SP ... the exception being the race. In SP you race AI ships. In MP you can only race other players.

from the customization kit readme:

"To skip the intro movie to the game, create a text file with the name novideo.txt in the same folder as the EXE. It can contain any value"

the animated logo will still play but the video intro will not.

Thanks again. I skimmed through that readme but missed that one. I guess I was looking for a switch to be added to the shortcut.

I can tell this is going to be so much fun. ... an adventure through space

I've mined enough asteroids now I can upgrade my ship. I can't wait to get home from work.

have a nice day

Another question:

Is there a way to move about the Evo Universe neutral to all factions?

In SP, I've gone to 2 or 3 other systems that all seem to have aggresive people flying around wanting to blow ships up even if docked at a space station.

I wish I could do something to declare neutrality and just go about mining and doing humanitarian missions.

In other words, is there a list of systems that welcome peace loving wayfarers?

Thanks again

Is that map part of the stock game? All I found was an economy and territory map.

I was trying to go to the higher economy systems to seel a ship load of platimun and that's when I discovered not everyone plays nice.

One of my pilots is stuck in a base in the Olympus system ... but they have some ships that look good. Maybe I can upgrade and scoot back to a friently place.

I'll go look in the mods section.

 The quadrant map shown above is a modded version. The standard quadrant maps show (1) economy and (2) territory held by the Alliance, the Federation, etc. I find this one to be more helpful than the standard territory map.

;) The economy map is still good, though. You can use it to determine the best systems for buying high-tech equipment ... then compare the high-tech systems against the above map to find the safest places to acquire better ships and equipment.

That would be nice.
I don't have a printer at home so I had to physically draw that one after I saved the image. I'm kind of challenged with displays and printers right now but my 'puters good.

And an observation ... I was having a bunch of crashes the past few days. I was preparing a text file with the Win7 dumps but as I was reading the crash section in tech support it said to simply load a pilot then exit and the system would clean up the problem. It appeared to work. (time will tell)

That's very nice. This program is an awesome piece of work.

Edit: I spoke too soon. I experienced crashes again after posting the above. The method I described I'm not sure now. But, I think I found the problem. It was crashing at the end of the load and the message "entering universe" came up. So I tried removing all the environment mods related to nebulas and starts and now all the pilots load. (maybe I should post this in tech support)
