Questions about speeds
In Evochron Mercenary, I had the starting miner stuff. My maxamium speed was 585 or something around that (by 585, I mean on the hud, you have the S thing, the value I could go highest on was 585 or around that). Recently, I've been buying fuel converters at evochron for 600,000, then selling at Atlas for 1.7mil-1.8mil. On my final run, I noticed my speed, I was now able to go as high as 1675! I still had my original, class I engine. And now I own a Venture frame, and now its down to 440! Can anyone explain the speed system in this game?

Questions about speeds
The lower speed you see is the normal speed for an engine so take the 585 you mentioned, you have what is called an IDS multiplier. I forget what the default keys are but when you press the increase key it raises your IDS from x1 to x2 then x3, x4 and highest is x5. At x5 you will notice your base speed has increased but you need to reset it by pushing the main speed number (from 1 to 9 I think).

Questions about speeds
What you saw was your IDS speed (inertial damping system). It sets your speed to a certain value, and tries to imitate atmospheric flight. This speed depends on your engines, frame, IDS multiplier. Perhaps you had your IDS multiplier higher at one time, or perhaps you jumped in inertial mode, and came out at your passive inertial speed (2 times your max IDS x1 speed).
Another possibility is that you were flying in inertial mode and used your afterburner. In inertial mode you can go as fast as you want, as long as you have fuel to accelerate.
I recommend learning to fly in inertial mode, since it does not limit your speed at all, and it gives you the best freedom of movement.

I use inertial mode almost all the time, but I find it's very poor in turning, so if I have to make a turn over 45 degrees, I switch to IDS just to make the turning a bit faster.

You can turn as fast as with IDS. you just need to use your thrusters manually. it requires some practice though, but it can be very useful.

Numpad 9 is default IDS increase toggle. Numpad 7 is default IDS decrease toggle. A/D/Z/X are the thruster/strafe default controls - left/right/up/down. "It's deja vu all over again!"
