Switching from a Civilian frame to a Military frame?

Post by Laraso »

I've recently got all 4 different types of crew members to 100% skill and 100% loyalty. Obviously, that isn't something I want to give up easily.

So, only shortly after maxing them all out, I traveled to Alpha Centauri and stumbled across the Evader naval carrier. I docked on it, and went to edit something on my ship when I noticed something.

All of the frames were completely different! The military frames not only looked amazing, but had excellent stats too! My only problem is that none of them have any points at all, so I can't bring a crew along with them nor can I put any equipment on it.

So... I'm sorta at a loss here. Can somebody explain the Pros and Cons of civilian and military frames?

 Military frames are fighter spacecraft. Single-seaters. The only modification you can make to any of them is to increase fuel capacity. When you trade a civilian ship for a military one, you sacrifice your entire crew. They really get upset about that and, should you have a change of heart and go back to a civilian ship, you'll need to hire a new crew.

Sounds to me like military frames aren't very much fun to fly. They probably look cool and are better at combat, but I suppose that I enjoy having a crew, a large cargo hold, and a healthy paranoia toward the color red.

To each their own, i suppose. Besides, my navigator would kill me if I fired him after all i've put him through.

 Equipment, weapons and missiles can always be upgraded ... depending on the ship's rigging.

The Shadow is the first mil frame where you can utilize both 8 eqpt and 8 missile/2ndry wpns hard-points. And all mil frames are single-seat templates. Military standardizes, civilians customize. With the Shadow frame, I usually have installed an Excalibur missile rack, and an IceSpear/Neodymium primary wpns suite, somewhat regardless of frame. The Talison CZ is probably the "best" war zone where new mil pilots, or for those pilots with customized civ frames. And, Talison Prime is a generally Good system with some substantial pay-offs for the dilligent. With Cerulean close by, and then Atlas..... ;)

If you have an interest in pvp, the military ships are the way to go. It's a great alternative to the sandbox parts of the game and everyone should give it a try. :)

You can also have a few Pilot profiles with a Civie frame and a few with Military frames. We have like 99 slots to use. The only bad thing is each Pilot profile only gets improved (more money and rank) with use.:)

I suggest using one profile to get money and rank then split the profiles for civ/mil ships.

I would also suggest having back ups saved just to be safe. All you have to do is save a profile right before you die once to wish you had a backup, so you don't have to start from the beginning again.

 If you decide to spend a lot of time exploring, you might want a specific profile for that (I'd go with a civilian ship, with a science officer aboard). And if you join a clan which spends a lot of time in uncharted (and, therefore, un-gated) star systems, you might also want a profile for that ... and, if the systems are far apart, maybe even one profile for each system. Plus one for the gated systems (one military ship shoud be enough for that).
