Reputation questions

Post by Buccura »

I know there are probably some guides online but I'd like to get some direct advice :)

The first is what is the best way to increase reputation? It seems that simply killing enemies of a particular faction do fairly well, but I'm wondering if there is any more effective way.

The second is if I increase reputation in one system, will it marginally increase the reputation for that faction in a neighboring one? I ask because as it stands there are still several star systems in which the Navy and Energy Company is hostile to me, even though in Sapphire and most the neighboring systems they are on fairly good terms with me.

Thanks for those willing to help a silly newbie out <3

I had the same question. I thought that all reputations were sector based. Then I noticed that the faction I was grinding rep for started to slowly go neutral in other sectors! This is very pleasing indeed but like you I have no clue how to exploit the mechanic for maximum effectiveness.

Also I'm confused about Vanari rep. Is it possible to grind it just like the others (with missions, trading, fighting)? It seems like just killing energy, navy, guild, and rebels would do nothing but equalize those reps out and keep the Vanari against you. Please note that I've not finished IMG so if there's something lore wise I'm unaware of please put spoiler tags in ;)

 The odd thing about Vonari is, if you fly direct from gated space (like a war zone) to Vonari space, you're likely to pass a few friendly (green) Vonari ships. And perhaps even a few unexplored star systems.

Faction reputation mostly. I mostly care about being good with Energy and Navy on this particular file.

I'd still like to know what is the best way to increase my reputation. I've put a lot of time in but I'm still working to get the hang of just how reputation works.

Also, when I see a Navy ship that's red, even though there are green Navy ships, is it because that red ship is from a further system that is still hostile toward me? Just making sure, because I know the whole universe is seamless in this.

The Legends Guide has the best description of how reputataions work that I know of. DaveK and his Mercs Manual and then the Hit/Tips/Tricks compendium make some mention of it as well. Basically faction rep can be advanced thru contract completions for that faction. Energy-Miners-Navy faction rep is rather intricately tied to each other, as they represent the "law-and-order" side of the mix. The rebels are as much of a pain to the Guild, as they are to the E-M-N club. Choose your course wisely, young Padwan. ;)

 To add:
  • Faction reputation differs in each star system. 'Cause each star system has its own society ... governed by whomever.
  • You help out the good guys in any star system by accepting and completing contracts for the good guys (not for the Rebs or the Guilds).
  • Once you decide to assist the good guys in any specific star system, stay with it long enough to change the global reputation ... something you can only do in single-player.
  • Speaking of single-player, if you leave a star system before the global reputation changes (hopefully for the better), the good citizens of that star system will assume you abandoned them (unlike the Magnificent 7). Consequently, your faction reputation in that star system will decrease ... depending on how long you're away.
  • Not so in multiplayer. In MP, you can't change global reputation ... it remains whatever it is. But you can improve your faction reputation ... which, in Moderate of Hostile systems can mean fewer sporadic attacks on your person.
  • Either way, doing contracts is how to improve your reputation ... both faction and civilian. And, if in a war zone, your military rank.

And always remember, never forget... ALL Navy missions completed (and there are only Navy missions), in a CZ/WZ not only increase your military rank, it has a corresponding relationship to your civ ratings as well. Everything you do there counts.:cool:
