Understanding and preparing for multiplayer

Post by 60x420 »

Hi everyone,

I am quite excited about the multiplayer aspects of Evochron. I have been reading through the instructions to get a better understanding, while I build up my character to the point where I think I could survive for awhile when playing with others.

Being a noob, I am sure there are many people here with much more experience. So, I thought I would toss out some questions, and if you feel inclined you could answer one, some, or all of them,

Thanks.

1) Is there an active online community playing Evochron?

2) Is it difficult to find others to play with?

3) Do all online players join clans?

4) Is there anything in particular that a noob should do to prepare for multiplayer play?

5) Are there any online behaviors when playing that are frowned upon (not including acting like an a**hole, etc)?

6) How much time does an online session last? Or rather, what is the minimum amount of time required for an online session?

7) If I have a friend who enjoys playing coop space simulations, would we be able to enjoy ourselves on our own private server, or do you need more than two people to properly enjoy the online experience?

Thanks again.

Understanding and preparing for multiplayer

 When you select the Multiplayer option to the game, you get sent to a page where you can get a list of online servers. If you right-click on any of the server names, you'll see who is currently playing on that specific server.

 The only rule that covers most servers is, when chatting, keep the language clean. Some players are young.

 Anything you don't know about EM you can learn by asking questions while in multiplayer. Press the Enter key to open a chat box.

 A session can last a few minutes, a few days ... or a few weeks (if you so choose). And, while it's possible to host your own server, there is little to no disadvantage to joing a server currently in operation. Unless you join a busy server, where all the territory is taken. Then you should tread softly ... while some clans (like IM) are pretty laid back when it comes to other pilots building stations in their territory, other clans can get rather upset and hostile.

Hi.

1) Is there an active online community playing Evochron?
Most players online use this forum as well. Lots of new Steam players out there thou.

2) Is it difficult to find others to play with?
Nope, just start chatting or press Tilde or Scrollock to see where all pilots are.

3) Do all online players join clans?
Nope, many pilots do their own stuff and join in for some PvP or joint contracts.

4) Is there anything in particular that a noob should do to prepare for multiplayer play?
Yes. Put a big smile on your face and prepare to have some fun!

5) Are there any online behaviors when playing that are frowned upon (not including acting like an a**hole, etc)?
Attacking noobs is not very nice. We want them to stick around.
Attacking a docked players is not nice either. We normally ask for PvP.
Parking outside the dock and keep blowing pilots up is not fun!

6) How much time does an online session last? Or rather, what is the minimum amount of time required for an online session?
All up to you!;)

7) If I have a friend who enjoys playing coop space simulations, would we be able to enjoy ourselves on our own private server, or do you need more than two people to properly enjoy the online experience?
Sure you will, but I prefer to meet more people on a public server.
Connecting your ship where one is pilot and the other is a gunner is great fun!
Doing joint contracts is much more fun and you and your friend can do that in private or on a public server.

Biggest mistake I made when I started the game was to wait until I had "enough experience" before joining MP (only one server at that time!) :)

Join - you will get help if you need it, can ask questions or be left alone if you want to sort things out for yourself

Second biggest mistake was attacking a very experienced pilot because I thought they were attacking me in a station - you don't get bumped into in SP and it looks and sounds like being shot! Anyway the embarrassment only lasted for a few seconds and then I reloaded and found out what had actually happened! :P:P

 I second that one. There have been a few times when a Vet needed to sort out a quarrel between two new pilots who bumped into each other while attempting to dock ... then jumping to the (wrong) conclusion that the other pilot had began an attack.

Yup.. if you die.. you just reload save game like you would in SP.. evrything you do in SP or MP is the same as far as progress in the game. You could join a MP server on the first day and play the game in the same way as you would if you were on your own in SP. Just because you're on the MP server doesn't force you to interact with others or join in on what they are doing.. but if you get stuck, you can more quickly find a solution... and if you run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere, most people will come and rescue you if they are not in the middle of something important.

In other words, there's no difference to your character or gameplay if you are on MP or SP.. just that there are real people in game with you, that's the only difference... So there's no real need to "get up to scratch" and then join after... just join MP now and play it the same as you would in SP. :)

Also harrassment is frowned upon. That would be under the attacking people right out of the dock over and over again. Some servers just frown upon it. Some, like mine, Starport 6, have a rule against harrassment.

Like one of the repliers said, we don't want to run people off. This is a game and supposed to be fun. If I am attacked right out of the dock and killed over and over and over again, I'll go to another server. If it keeps happening I might just stick with single player. Some might quit Evochron Mercenary altogether and that would be a shame since it's such a fun game.

Except some of the quest missions can't be accepted in multi-player. But you can go to single player, do the mission and then save, exit, and go online and you're ready for the next quest mission.

There is only one quest mission that has to be done in SP.
The Race. (In MP all races are between real people, not against AI).
