Or maybe your weapon system needs repair, do you hear any sound (different than when firing?).
A;sp you can direct the power either to the weapons or the shields ( its 50% weapons and 5% shields by default).
I am not sure if you have directed 100% the energy to the shields if the weapons just don't work at all.

Welcome Kronos. It happened to me acupla times. You might wanna check "configure controls." Mouse buton 1 may not be highlighted for "fire primary weapon."
