How can I see my current objectives?

Post by dmutters »

Hello, all. This is my first post. :-)

I'm playing the demo and trying to figure this game out, so I can see if I want to buy it. I've recently accepted a mission, and have gone to the nav point, but when I get there, I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do! How can I see my current objectives?

I've Googled, searched this forum, watched the training videos on youtube, etc., and I simply can't figure this out; it's driving me crazy! Can anybody please tell me what button I need to push/click to see my current objectives?

Also, I saw a thing pop up about a distress beacon, and I can't figure out how to go there, or select it as a current objective.

Help, please! I love this genre (and want to see it revived), but I'm having immense trouble figuring this game out.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome.

To see your current contract, just press F3 and click on Current Contract.

The Distress Calls may take you to systems far away from where you are.
They might be delivery of some items, rescue a stranded pilot etc.
Don't worry about them to start with. Need to learn a bit more first (imho).

Welcome dmutters. You're a virgin noobie just deflowered today. The very 1st thing to do is to CALM DOWN throughout this sim! This game has a learning curve tougher than any other of this genre.

First: There are messages & contracts. Any and all messages (incl multi-player) appear in order received in the upper left of your screen. You can retrieve them at any time (in order received) by pressing numberpad alt /. You can erase them by pressing *. The last I.M.G message received by you is found by pressing "Inventory Console" F3, click on "news console", then "view last quest message". The message will always be there until the quest is completed. "Available Contracts" are quests that appear only at planets, stations, outposts, and carriers in the Inventory Console.

Second: I highly suggest that you familiarize yourself with both the in-game tutorial, and the Keyboard "Configure Controls". Studying these tools will make the "learning curve" easier to round out. Good Luck Pilot

Wow, thanks, everybody! You guys are awesome. :-)

I feel a bit silly for not having noticed the quests and messages buttons in the Intentory menu, before; thanks for point them out to me!

XinCasa, you're certainly right about the learning curve in this game; I used to think games like WingCommander had a pretty big curve...wow. Still, I've begun figuring it out--flight mechanics, objectives, etc., and it's shaping up to be a really cool game--that I'll probably want to buy the full version of, as soon as I can afford to.

I've found a great HTML tutorial here: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronlegen ... lguide.htm

...that I think will help me and other beginners a lot. (Posting that link for the benefit of other noobs...)

The in-game tutorials, which I finished, are a bit hard to absorb, and lack a lot of important details, IMHO, but the community-produced stuff I've been finding, plus the YouTube videos by StarWraith have proven immensely helpful; this game seems to have a really great community!

One last question, if I may: I've noticed that the scope of what kinds of missions are available is pretty limited; is this the "main thing" to do in this game (for profit, story, etc.), or am I missing something big? I suspect that there's a lot of exploration to be done, but I worry that it'll just be a matter of exploring places that all offer the same quests as each other--albeit at different pricing and difficulty levels.

Thanks very much for all your help!

There are two types of objectives: (1) missions and (2) the quest. Missions are pretty much the same for most star systems ... the exception being war zones. The default quest sends you to a variety of places, giving you different things to do. Afterward, if you're into exploration, you can download and do the Quest for Peace.

The other main thing to do is to log onto a server and begin building your empire.

'Sup dmutters! Tnx for the tutorial link u posted. It's a winner. Yeh, ur right. The contracts are a bit redundant from station to station except for the credit rewards, and leave a lot to be desired. When you get a chance, check out the Arvocjh Alliance. It's the sequel to EM that concentrates only on fighting missions, and is much less variant. I play both intermittently. It's great that the forums apply to both sims. Good Luck Pilot

I'll check that out, XinCasa.

I also happened to find a tutorial on how to get the main quest started:

http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6644

Apparently, I just needed to use the "rear view" button to find the right place to land. :-) (I'm all for posting solutions to my questions for future readers...)

Thanks, everybody; you've been a great help! I'd forgotten just how fun this genre of game can be, and now that I'm "getting it" with EM, it's all coming back to me...ooh, yeah!
