A problem w/ the start Merc Quest

Sorry, don't mean to sound idiodic or anything but, I have been playing for quite a while now and gotten quite far as a miner trader. I have a Starmaster maxed out w/ plenty of money. Problem is, I was never prompted for any kind of quest at the start. is there somewhere I should go to do this? The game at this point is getting a bit boring where it's to the point I have thought of buying a fighter and starting a combat career. Would like to do the quest though.
