How do you guys handle this?

Post by Vagrant »

Hi, first of all. I'm a relative newbie to the game having bought it on steam recently. Let me share a little tale if I may.

I'm happily cruising around the Legends of Evochron server. I'm pretty new so I'm still in that, stay in Sapphire, do some mining, mindset, with the odd trip to Olympus if I'm feeling brave.

I'm mining the asteroids that are literally next to planet Sapphire when I hear "Warning: incoming missile.".
I've just filled my cargo hold with platinum and diamonds and 24 units of metal (1 more to respond to a distress call on Glacia that just popped up with a 261k reward).

I'm thinking... what, there are no hostiles here...
BOOM
Vagrant was destroyed by Evadez.
It would be an understatement to say I was a bit miffed. I was downright angry at losing 50 diamonds, 50 platinum, 24 metal and the chance of a 260k payout.

I hit tilde and noticed Evadez making his escape through some of the Sapphire sectors and I give chase. I might be new and a civilian, but it's one thing being caught unawares and shot in the back while stationary and another to come bearing down with icespear cannons and a payload of viper missiles. I'm thinking revenge is a dish best served immediately.

Evadez gives me the runaround eventually coming to rest back where we started. Sapphire central, sx 0, sy 0, sz 0. I'm hopping round the sector looking for him and eventually decide to try this on fair terms. I tell Evadez he just cost me 260k+ and ask him to transmit his pos.
His reply? "Lol".

I'm not a stupid guy. This attack reeks of cowardice and I doubt this is the 'welcome initiation' I've read about. This guy has to be new. So I lurk around Evochron Station figuring he has to refuel eventually. Sure enough, I eventually spot him coming into dock.
Missiles locked, firing... "Evadez quit".

I try to think logically. I try to remind myself that I'm 30 years old. I'm all grown up and this is just a game.
It almost worked but I'm still mighty peeved at this chucklehead.

So I think to myself, I've lurked on these forums. I've seen that people generally abide by a code of honour with some leeway here and there, but still decent folk.

I don't know how you guys handle this. If you have some system in place for taking care of people who do this kinda thing. But if you see Evadez online... give him a missile volley from me would ya? Preferably when he least expects it. ;)

This can happen. Space is a dangerous place.
Fortunately it is fairly rare, even so, I have been caught off guard a number of times. My first advice would be to remember the quicksave keys.
At least you wont lose your cargo. There is still the matter of ego damage though, this can hurt the most, I know.
I am reasonably sure this is also against the rules on the Legends of Evochron server and most if not all other servers.

The other advice would be to keep an eye on the the player list (tilde key) to see which pilots are in what sector and where they are headed for. This is handy also to search and hunt him down next time he is online.

I'm sure when he comes online again , if he is using the same callsign you will be ready for him and for revenge.
Even if he uses a different name to fly under you can sometimes know who it is just by his actions alone. Watch that player list ~ and Quicksave Alt+F9 at any time you think danger may be approaching.

"What a Bummer Vagrant...definitely not cool"....considering his back attack I'm sure he will just change his name, but maybe not only time will tell. As MiaZ said it can be dangerous in Space so prepare for anything. Clan [BA] has their calling card but they are honorable and won't attack in Sapphire. If you see me online in MP just hail me and I will give you your hard earned credits :)

I'm with both bro Miaz and Brave on this one. Alt-F9 (Quick-save) is your best buddy here in the Evo-verse. And checking the tilde ket is always a good practise, especially if you can parse out nav co-ords and the Quad map. There are as you've found, unscrupulous and dishonorable people here as well as in real life. The trick is to see 'em comin', afore they get there. Revenge is a dish best served with mayonnaise and those little cheesey things on sticks. ;)

I'd post my thoughts here on the subject, but it would get me banned!:o

I don't have this problem because some years ago I decided that while in theory MP games were great, in practice, i hated them. Now I've been on this board for just a few weeks, the people have been nothing but civil, nice, helpful. I'll share opinions with them, ask for help (and give it if i ever can) and all those things but that doesn't mean i want to play with them. Between RP nazis and people who constantly break the immersion by discussing their lives, there seems to be no happy middle ground. That's without mentioning the socipathic griefers that only get enjoyment in ruining everyone else's good time and those that use terms like pwn and f4g (to be fair i doubt EM is home to any of that kind of players) and who feel important because they are pretty good at some video game. I realised eventually that by playing MP games i was forced to interact with SOME (because still not everyone sucks) people i'd never want to talk to irl and the last time i was forced in a situation like this was High School and that was enough already. So why should I interact with people i don't like when I'm trying to forget about the stress of life and enjoy myself? And it's why, about 4 years ago, I decided to give up entirely on MP games. For me the reward isn't as great as playing on my own, single player.

All that being said, I AM a bit of a misanthrope. ;) Human beings might be fundamentally good, but on the internet, they tend to be fundamentally bad.

Yes, i know my reply is not helpful for your problem......

I've actually made many friends here, and I usually don't talk real life while in the game. If I do get into a subject with somebody and another player asks me to stop I agree. As for role-playing, It's kinda hard to take it seriously with the R C tag that I use. I do get your point though.

I thought that I'd hate multiplayer before I tried EM. Then I came to realize Human controlled opponents were much more fun and challenging than the current AI. (Soon to be improved with the upcoming expansion pack).

While I wouldn't consider going back to SP, I have to admit that with the new influx of players and the percentage of which who represent themselves POORLY, I do feel somewhat disillusioned. One of the downsides of interacting with the 'anonymous consciousness' I guess...

I deal with it alot by ingnoring most of the chat and traveling to places in game that other players wouldn't waste 2 hours to reach looking for me. When my good friends are online then I'll meet them and PvP or do missions together.

Hi Vagrant and welcome.

That is not "normal" behavior and I will keep my eye's open and retaliate for you.

I will also (As Brave said) be happy to pay you what you lost.

A hint to avoid this again:
Change your Right MFD from target to target list. (G default I think).
That way you will spot any players when they're within 9999K.
If he/she closes in without stating intentions, SAVE, then start moving/jumping.
He/she will never catch you if you keep jumping.

If I'm online, just give me a "call" and I'll watch your 6 while you do your business!

Raynor,

I kind of know that feeling.
My experiences with MP haven't always been very smooth.
But I would say the Evochon has been the exception. (With it now available on steam things might change)
Starting with the first few words of greeting, speaking to me out of nowhere on an empty server, (Babylon 5)
I could see this was going to be a different kind of community.
MM, the server operator at that time gave me my impression of what online in Evochron was going to be like. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Space is a big place, its not hard to keep your distance from other players and just do your own thing.
SinglePlayer is good but there are things you just cant do in SP and lots of hints, tips and secrets don't ever get leaked there ;)

I'm not trying to convert you or anything but just don't give up on it just yet.
The everyone is fundamentally bad on the internet rule, doesn't always apply.

I feel generally the same as Raynor with MP games. But has this kind of things occurred on Legends of Evochron server because it's was PVP ? I thought there were PVE Servers by default. If not, well that sucks. I can force myself ignoring insults, teenager behaviors but this is unbearable.

By the way, can we Steam users download the 1.808 patch from Starwraith instead of waiting for the Steam upgrade ?

Hey Vagrant,

Sorry to hear that mate, something like that just sucks, I would have been far from happy too in your situation too.
I've checked the server rules for you, and it doesn't really say it's not allowed. However, it clearly is far from 'good sportsmanship' and if I would be the server admin, I would have given him a pretty hard time over it.
I also would like to point out that personally I have never witnessed such behavior while playing EM before. But I guess with the explosive influx of new players and the addition of so many servers, something like this is inevitable in the end. This is why I think having server admins who can deal with the situation there and then is a good thing.

You could consider writing a u2u to zonnaiko, who is the server operator of Evochron Legends and file your complaint with him. If you ask me, Saphire should be a 'safe' system no matter which server you're playing on. And players should take the responsibility to check what rating/rank other players have before attacking them. That said, attacking someone in the back while the other player is just sitting there mining is just lame.

I'm sure I can manage to re-earn some cash, no biggy. Some good advice here folks.
Thanks to See Jay for a very practical solution. If I'd been able to see him coming I would have been more prepared. I was probably paying way too much attention to swinging my mining laser around in synch with Pink Floyd. ¬¬ It was the sheer suddenness that prevented me from saving or anything. He must have been literally right behind me.

Ah well, you live and learn. I'll be more aware in future and if I see Evadez again he can lol at the sharp end of my missiles.

You're most welcome.

One caution thou. If he uses a stealth device, you might not be able to see him until he
reveals himself. He can not fire when in stealth mode. (Hitting ESC will always work if you need to)

I always assume a new contact is hostile (They rarely are) and watch my six more than I look
forward LOL. I will notice if I hit anything so no need to look that way!:P:P:P:P

Hop online and we'll have a blast hunting together!;)

If I see Evadez I might just give him a little shield damge on your behalf.
But I won't reduce him to space dust, though tempting it might be : )

edit:
Now that I think about it some more, I think I may have been in the same server at that time.
Are you sure it wasn't Evochron Horizons?
< Vagrant was destroyed by Evadez > rings a bell.
Whenever i see a player destroyed in sapphire, i try to keep an eye out to make sure it was consensual PvP.
I am not always anywhere close enough to come to assist though.

Thanks for letting us know his call sign. Next time I see him online I'll blast him out of the sky with no warning or regets.

Hi Vagrant, welcome to the game and forum!....Hope to see you out there some time!....;)

I would have handled it just as you did now by posting your question? Bullies and Cowards will not be tollerated in my book!....I have been sneaked attack before but always by players I knew or players that wanted a challange and they would not run after the sneak attack they would fight to see if they could beat me!. If I see or hear of anyone on any Server attack a new player by a sneak attack without warning and then run I will personally blast him away without warning if he/she gets near to me!.....So you better watch out Evadez if you are reading this and I might be using a different call sign so you better watch all your clocks and not only your six!....;)

Hmm, I thought it was legends but maybe I was wrong. I think the only other person I saw online at the time was [LL] KingArthur.

Either way, nice to see he won't be having an easy ride to keep up this kind of behaviour. ^^

Well, it might have been someone else. I am not sure.
I have seen you around on a server somewhere though i am sure.
Evadez might have been doing it to others that day as well on horizons, idk, but we'll be keeping a look out for him now.

hi vagrent

this is not the "norm" for evochron.
attacs like this are rare and the problem is quickly eliminated.
if you or any player falls victim to this, just ask and a possie of vets will surely join you for a wabbit hunt. hehe

and to raynor:

I understand you view on MP but I have to say this games MP and forum community are not like any other

at least give MP a look sometime

It'd be nice to see him get his just desserts. :P Despite the income he cost me I still managed to make a sweet trade trip over to Olympus. Bought myself a class 4 jump drive and had a little adventure. Then I ran into a large pile of hostiles by Olympus Sigma. So I escaped back to Sapphire for now.

I took See Jay's advice and pressed G. What an infinitely more useful display that is! :D

Oh well, time to go do some real life work for now. Space exploration will have to wait. ;)
