Modifying a combat pilot ship?
Such as the starting ferret, is it possible?

Nope, military ship you can not modify. Only thing you can change is the fuel tank capacity of military ships.
Now Civilian ships you can modify for combat purposes, but will never be better in combat as its military counterpart!.......
