New Pilot: Greetings & Questions

Post by Jingo »

Hey everyone!

New pilot here. I've never played any of the Evochron games, so I'm completely new to the universe- enjoying it so far though!

Just a couple of questions for the rest of you:

A) Upon completing the story missions you get directed towards secret cargo locations. I've been to the first 2 nav co-ords given, but there is nothing there. Is this broken or am I just not looking properly?

B) My roll keys (bound to Q and E) are causing my ship to roll INCREDIBLY slowly since I installed my joystick. Any ideas? Takes me about a minute to do a full 360.

C) Is there a method (or planned mod) to getting our own songs to play ingame? Ideally I'd like to group my own music into Standard Space and Combat folders so certain songs would play in the relevant settings. If not, might be mod for thought. :)

Thanks for all your time,

Jingo - Second in the Space Race.

Jingo

Welcome.

If I remember correctly the waypoints to the secret locations are not exactly in the right place, so you will have to search a little bit, but not too far.

Can't help with part (B) but I am sure there are others out there who can.

Regarding part (C) there is some info on changing the in game music, and a search on the forum should point you in the right direction.

Not much help, but at least you know the forum is very active.

See you out there

A) It is been a long time since I did the Quests.
So for the secret Cargo location make sure you are in the right Place. Ussualy the Quest gives you a name of a System Planet or Station or Sector in which to go to the given Coordinates. If you are in the wrong sector you will never find the Cargo.

B) What kind of Joystick are you using? are you using a Profile editor to asign key commands to your Joystick buttons?
Try assigning the roll Axis of your Joystick in the ingame Joystick configuration/setup and see if the Axis for roll responds slow or fast! and once assigened to the right Axis save your configuration settings.

C) Yes, download the EvochronMercenary Customization kit from the download site and read the read me file in there! how to add your own sounds and music mods!....;)

Welcome, Jingo! So, tell us, who's _first_ in the space race? :P

The guys have already answered your questions, I'll only add that for the not-so-secret cargo containers, you may have to fly around a bit; look for _white_ blips on your radar (or they might be purple, if they're "unidentified", I don't remember; but as the line right below your radar says, white stuff is cargo, purple blips are unidentified stuff).
You'll find them.
If you want, you can hire a navigator, too, to help find more stuff, but it's not really necessary, especially when you are given the coords for the containers. But you can try it that way, too.

Good luck, and I hope you increase your standing in the space race! :D

 To emphasize one previous point: read carefully where to go to find the cargo pods. You will usually be told which planet and the coordinates of the sector where that planet is located. Usually, the planet in question is not the same planet as the one in the sector where you got the hint.

Hello, I'm newbie too and I have similar problems.

1º The coords I've been given for the containers when I do the first quest mission: the message you get goes like this:it starts giving you this coordinates:

Sx:1249 SY:0 SZ: 502
and then the message for fulfilling the mission, thanks for your cooperation bla bla bla, ther mercenaries, bla bla bla, don't give this location to anyone, bla bla bla and then it says these other coordinates:
X=-70000 Y=-20000 Z=80000

So, in the same sector I am, If I use the last coordinates I found myself near a planet but see containers nowhere, If place the whole thing (first and last coordinates) in the navigation menu those are too far away so I select autopilot to automatically jumps there, problem is... it takes forever of jumps (using jump drive lvl3) and Im still at SX:40 or something and already running out of fuel.

2º Ship-roll. My ship also rolls very slow. I have the ROLL disabled in the joystick since my joystick can't do that, so I am using E+Q in the keyboard instead but it is painfully slow. My joystick is a simple Logitech Wingman attack 3.

The first set of Coordinates are the sector Coordinates and these are sector coordinates in the System Olympus Prime. So take the jumpgates to Olympus Prime and then find the Sector SX:1249, SY:0, SZ:502 in Olympus Prime. Once you are in Sector SX:1249, SY:0, SZ:502 then set your second set of coordinates X=-70000 Y=-20000 Z=80000 and fly to those!....;)

Hmm, I'm having the same problem with slow rolling and I also have a Logitech Attack 3. Yesterday was fine but I wasn't using my joystick either, I didn't think about installing the joystick causing the problem, just figured it was a Steam update or something this morning.

Did you guys try to configure your Joystick in the Games Joystick configuration Menu and assigning the proper roll axis?....

I don't have a roll axis. My joystick is two-axis plus a throttle, but I did map the joystick 4 and 5 buttons to roll left and right, respectively.

Just a question or two; Have you tested the roll using the stick and without disconnecting it test using the roll keys? Have you gotten a bigger ship but not upgraded your wings or just downgraded your wings? I ask the last cause the thrusters in the wings control roll so the better the wing the faster the roll and the bigger the ship the slower the roll.:)

Opening the in-game menu (hit Esc) and changing the Control Mode from Joystick to Keyboard allows me to roll at normal speed with the Q and E keys. I must have my joystick misconfigured somehow, but not sure how. It doesn't have a roll axis.

Most Joysticks have two Axis. The Up and Down Axis(Pitch) and the Roll left and Right Axis. And the Turn left and Right axis is ussualy controlled by the rudder pedals or twist action of the Joystick if your joystick has a twist axis.

Now if you used your joystick before for flight simulators you might have the rudder control set to move according to airplane dynamics, which could be very slow, in the Joysticks programmings software if you used the joysticks programming software for flight simulators that is....;)

Thing is the roll axis has been previously disabled in the joystick configuration of the game so the roll is only assigned to E and Q keyboard keys, joystick lacks that axis and if you try to assign it like I did you end up in a neverending rolling ship (btw, roll then is as fast as it should but uncontrollable).

What kind of Joystick is it? Is it an old one like an Arcade kind of Joystick? Sounds like the Joystick is defective or that the Axis control electric contacts are stuck in a certain roll position and that the only way to controll it is via the Q and E Keys which will make it roll slow......Did you try opening the Joystick and cleaning it and checking the contacts?....;)

Like I mentioned earlier it is a logitech wingman attack 3.

It is in perfect shape and I use it to play X3:AP which is another joystick space game without any kind of problems, by the way in that game I can roll with keys without problems...

Allow me to repeat again what I said in case you also missed it "in my game Joystick Roll Axis is disabled because my joystick lacks that axis" it is only enabled in keyboard, E,Q keys.

Also about joysticks, the only two axis you will surely find in every joystick manufactured in this world are those with X,Y axis.

X axis in turning left or right
Y axis is up and down
ROLL AXIS is neither of those.

Maybe now I got my point across and someone has a helpful tip or a confirmation that this is a bug.

----

I tested starting the game with joystick disconnected and I got odd results:

* Roll with E,Q goes perfect
* Arrow Key movement in all directions, that is: up,down, left, right goes as slow as Rolling when joystick plugged.

"Welcome Aboard ezra-s"...I use a logitech attack3 joystick myself. I have noticed a significant reduction in roll speed in Evochron Mercenary. There is a slight increase with the larger wings on a civilian ship and the military ships can roll a little bit faster depending on which ship you fly. I personally prefer the fast rolls in Evochron Renegades and Evochron Legends. I have assigned different keys to see if that helped but met up with the same slow roll, so I believe There is nothing wrong with your joystick.

I think this is important enough to make a query in the tech support forum, thank you BraveHart.

I have had the slow roll problem and agree it is important enough for tech support.
It is not just a little slow.
It is very very slow, you can tell its not right and has nothing to do with wing setttings or ship frame type.

Noticed now you have posted there in tech support.
I'm sure Vice will have a fix for it soon. I am always surprised at how fast Vice fixes these kinds of problems.
In the mean time you could try the mouse keyboard combo? I do hope that works for you.

:o This must only be a problem with 2-axiis joysticks 'cause I've never had the problem myself ... and I use two different 3-axiis joysticks. Both are set as is customary for aircraft ... with the X-Y axiis set for pitch and roll. If I was still using a 2-axiis joystick, I'd set it the same way: pitch and roll. Yaw is always a secondary consideration.

For me I have never used a 2axis stick in this game.

In the past I always had roll assigned to both an axis as well as stick buttons.
I did this because I never liked twist rudder. My old stick with the rocker type rudder now broken.
I never had problems with this setup in the past back when Legends was the latest game.

I don't understand why, when roll is NOT assigned to any axis in the game, there is still a problem. This is a something I have never seen before.

I always assign the Y axis to roll and the Z axis to yaw. I never use the keyboard as a replacement for the stick since discovering, in an entirely different game, that keyboard controlls can mirror ship performance as programmed for the AI (which is usually slower).
