How do you locate hidden systems?

So I've heard that there are a ton of hidden systems in EM that don't show up on the in-game quadrant map. How do people find them? How do you know where to start looking? Is there a good technique for inferring that a hidden system exists somewhere?

There is an easy way to find star systems.
It took a long time before I caught on to it.
There was some guy who either changed his callsign or no longer plays,
he gave me the hint. So credit goes to him. He said "Follow the light"
