Newbie Starting Out - Getting Frustrated & Have Questions, Please Help! :)

Post by Maverik770 »

Hey everyone!

So I'm playing the demo for this game and I'm really liking it. But I'm having some issues with a few things and I hope you guys can help set me straight so I can enjoy the game a bit mroe and understand what the heck I'm doing wrong.

1) My first issue and the one that is really annoying me, I accept a mission at a space station and it gives me a waypoint automatically. Those waypoints are always far away... So I undock and set autopilot. Autopilot gets me nice and lined up with the waypoint for my mission, all is going well. Except my mission waypoint is 105k away and it's taking forever for autopilot to get me there at 812 velocity. So I mouse over the "Jump" button and engage my jump drive to hop to the way point. Except about 90% of the time I click on the "Jump" button, it moves my waypoint cursor to some random location off to the left and then hyper jumps me out into the middle of no where and my mission gets cancelled. What the F?

I assume my mission is getting cancelled because I jumped too far away from the way point. Fine. But why did it randomly jump me into the middle of no where when I click the "Jump" button on my HUD? Shouldn't it jump me to my mission way point? What the heck am I missing? Why does it just hyperjump me out into space no where near my selected waypoint. Please explain to me how to quickly jump to mission waypoints cause this is getting extremely frustrating. I know I'm doing something wrong.

This happens to me sometimes when I manually select waypopints on my Navigation Map too. I select the waypoint with let click and then close my navigation map. I hit autopilot and get lined up and then click "Jump" and it moves my waypoint to some random location off to the side and hyperjumps me into the middle of no where. WTF?

2) Where do I find a mining laser/tractor beam? I need it for certain mission types and have yet to find one at space stations for sale.

3) If I go into the "Build Your Ship" area of a docking station I see all the options to change my ship and buy new parts. I currently have the starting ferret ship. It won't allow me to choose any different engines or wings or cargo bays for this ship. Is this ship just locked from most upgrades except fuel tanks? If so, how do you even tell which ships can upgrade which parts? I can't find any info about which ships can upgrade which parts or how to do it.

I'm pretty sure I had other questions as well but I can't think of them right now and these are the ones that are really bugging me. I'm digging the game and it's premise a LOT. Its just a little difficult to get into. The tutorial was extremely vague and had way to much talking and not enough hands on. Plus during the navigation tutorial it asks me to select a waypoint near certain coordinates and then never continues so I couldnt complete that portion fo the tutorial. The game seems amazing, it just needs ot be more accessible to new comers. I appreciate all the help and advice yall can give me. I'm going to buy the game if I can just get into it a little bit more first. Thanks everyone! :)

Hi and welcome.

1) Don't use autopilot. Just jump with F2.

2) In any station in Sapphire. If not, just leave sector and come back.

3) You drag and drop what you want in to the middle. If you can afford it and
you don't exceed the assembly points, you'll get it buy clicking "Build and exit" or something like that.

Hope it helps a bit.

Hi Maverik770, welcome to the game and forum...Hope to see you out there some time!....;)
Also when you set a waypoint manualy it can be tricky because your setting a way point in 3D space.
When setting a waypoint manualy by left clicking with the mouse on the map, check the maps both top view and rear view for the location of the set waypoint and that it is close to where you want it to be in both views. Also check your destination coordinates listed in your Nav map of the set waypoint that it matches the coordinates of the Sector your in so that you do not jump out of the sector by accident! The proper use of the nav map and setting waypoints can be tricky but once you know what you are doing it is very simple and easy to use!...;)

Hi Maverik770,

What Maars says is correct, however that is what you should do if you were setting a waypoint manually, without having a contract. When doing a contract, just hitting F2 after undocking will get you there.
So, follow SeeJay's instructions, with this note:
The Ferret you are flying is a military frame. Military frames are very limited in terms of frame setup (military regulations won't allow you to). I think the only thing you can change on a military ship is the fuel tank capacity.
If you want to customize your ship's frame, you should get a civilian frame, which you can get at any random Trade station.

Hello.

One thing that might not have gotten mentioned... By default, Alt + Jump (or F2) will jump you to your maximum distance possible. Since you have to hit Alt to mouse-click on the jump button, that's what's happening.

I recommend using F2. Just make sure you're not holding Alt when you do it. :D

I wish I had thought of this when he was asking in game! D'oh.

This is exactly what was happening! I didn't realize that holding Alt and clicking the Jump button on the HUD would be the same as pressing ALT + F2... This makes perfect sense now. Instead of just engaging a normal jump, I'm keying a max jump and that's why it sets a new waypoint automatically and jumps me so far out. Thanks a lot for catching that. I knew I was doing something wrong! Lol.

Also a big thank you to whomever explained the restrictions of customizing military ships. That explains my issue there as well.

So further on the topic of control. What do you vets recommend as a primary controller for this game? Joystick? Controller? Keyboard & Mouse? I have a Saitek AV8R Joystick, a 360 controller for Windows and obviously a keyboard & mouse available. So far I've been using keyboard & mouse but it feels very awkward. Do you guys mostly use joysticks? I don't have a full HOTAS, just a stick. Is just a joystick sufficient enough? Or should I stick with Keyboard & mouse?

Also, Maverik, regarding navigation and waypoints, you might like Marvin's excellent explanation and graphics from this thread:

 I prefer a joystick ... with the keyboard as secondary for lesser-used options (like the tractor beam).

It looks like most of us use a Joystick, there is a voting thread about what we prefer to use for controls and so far joystick is winning!.....;):P

Awesome, I'm gonna configure my Saitek AV8R tonight and give that a whirl. I'm really digging the game a lot more now that I'm making some solid progress. Thank you very much for the assistance everyone!

One last question for now. Is there a way to clear your target so that nothing is selected/targeted? When combat is over and there are only neutral and friendly ships around, I get annoyed always having something targeted and a colored pointer on my HUD pointing off to the side. I looked through the key bindings and didn't see a key to clear targets. Any advice on this? :)

No there is no clear target. You can turn your HUD and MDTS of and you will not see the closest ship targeted but it still is. The closest most hostile target to you will be targeted first automatically!.
