I've read that this is an important system that you'll often fly through in a couple of the hints/tips files out there, but said files also say that it's a hostile area. Is there any way to make it, or any other zones that are by default hostile, stop being hostile? I am very curious.

Not in multiplayer. But every system can be subdued in SP ... including Oasis.

Marvin is right, and he's alluding to the reputation section of the readme that comes with EM. Basically, you can change your reputation in any system, in single player - it just takes a lot of time and effort. But it's doable - it took me a looong time to make Pearl moderate, for instance.
