Can you use mods with multiplayer?

Or does the server/host also need said mods as well? Saw a thread on the steam forums linking to some nice mods like an HD/background one, looked awesome so I grabbed it but when I try to join back into my friends server my game basically crashes before reaching the loading screen.

Hi and welcome.

All mods work in both MP and SP.

For the ships however, the mod is only visible to you.
(If you use warsigns Viper for your Starmaster, you will see it but all else will see a Starmaster)

Ah ok, thanks for the answer, wonder why my game crashes when I try to load into my friends server but not when I load up a single player then, hmm.

All mods are purely client-side, so you should be able to apply any mod you want without anyone else noticing it. Some mods however (or probably most of them) use more memory than the standard game environment, some more than others. This is probably why you are experiencing some issues. Especially the bloom mod (the ENB series one) takes a lot of your computer. I have used it myself but eventually deactivated it because of the decrease in performance.

I had that problem early on.

I removed some of the environment mods and that fixed it.

Try it "clean" and then add mods one at a time!
