Couple questions

Post by rhinosaurus »

Hi all,

This isn't the first space-sim of this type I've played, so I shouldn't be horrendous at flying, but I am. Which is frustrating. Nonetheless, I will persevere.

My questions at the moment are thus:

1) Is there an asteroid scanner? If not, how do you know which asteroids have which minerals in which percentage? Is it just a guessing game (aside from eventually figuring out which locations have what in general)? Also, how many different mineral types are there?

2) HOW DO YOU TELL WHERE MISSILES ARE COMING FROM???? Holy cow. This is the most frustrating part of the game for me. I was never a very good fighter pilot to begin with, but I just -cannot- for the life of me detect the source of the missile launch, which obviously means I can't deploy countermeasures in the right arc to defend my sorry self. I'm doing to the quest where you have to defend the ship while it's preparing to jump, and I've once, and only once, managed to destroy three ships. Every other time I get myself blown to pieces before killing more than 1.

Thanks for the help :D Liking the game, now that I've figured out how to stop killing myself on jumps :D

Hi Rhinosaurus,
There is no asteroid scanner but there are different types of mining beams which will harvest only certain minerals. Its been a while since I've mined but I believe all the asteroids are the same as far as mineral content and proportions (correct me if I'm wrong guys)

As far as countermeasures go, the yellow to red pointers in the center of your screen will show you in what direction they are coming from. The little progress bar inside the pointer will tell you how close. I never look at the little progress bar since the audio alert will tell you how close they are to your ship ( faster beeps). Actually you really don't have to know what direction they are coming from. The trick is to turn off IDS before they hit and listen to the rapidity of the beeps. You should be able to take out a missle with a single countermeasure. To improve faster try learning to maneouver solely with IDS off (space bar). Good pilots rarely us IDS. I use it occasionally to right myself when I get to disoriented on what the ship is actually doing. Once you get use to flying with IDS off missles will be a snap to destroy.

Set up your joystick so you can easily tap the forward and reverse afterburners. Also set up a tophat to work the strafe buttons. Mastering these controls are essential.

Welcome to the game.

I'm not sure about the first one. I mined for about a week and just happened across whatever happened to be there. Certain asteroid fields contain certain elements, it seems to be the same in each rock in a cluster. Someone else might be able to help you more with that.

As far as missiles go, a yellow arrow appears around the target reticle and you'll hear a warning sound when a missile has been launched at you. At that point you can turn off IDS and drift, follow the arrow around and try to shoot the missile down, or wait until it's closer and launch counter measures. The arrow will change to red when a missile is close, that's the time to launch CM's. Drifting also reduces your signature and makes it easier to evade missiles. I like to turn and physically shoot the missiles down when I can, but if they manage to get close I just fire off countermeasures until the lock on alarm stops beeping. Don't be stingy with CM's, they're cheap.

Escort missions are a bit tougher because it's harder to fly around the edges and pick enemies off since time is off the essence. You can always ask for assistance in MP, someone will surely help you! IMG contracts can be completed in multiplayer, too.

Hello rhinosaurus, Most missiles will be coming at you from the closest enemy which will be indicated by a red arrow at the edge of your aiming receptacle if you have the nearest enemy picked anyway. Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Have fun and hope to see you in "Multi-Player" sometime. :)

Ya. Not having as much trouble with the missiles now, but I'm still getting owned. Swapping to inertial doesn't seem to be helping me stay alive very much, I'm still getting nailed by particle fire.

Hang in there. It will come. make sure you keep your speed up. Start with the jousting method. Build up your speed to about 1000 to 1500. as you get close, turn off IDS kick in a little strafe and keep your nose pointed at your target and fire. You'll end up going backwards. Turn IDS on to reverse your direction and make another pass the same way.

Been getting some more cash so I can upgrade weapons. If they die faster, I stay alive longer :P
