set speed
Hello all,
I could use some help understanding set speed.
Maybe I hit some key button or something inadvertently because every time I launch, the ship is moving at a set speed that I can't get back to zero using the + or - . or using the w or s keys. The speed just sits there at 259 or...
I can increase speed using the afterburner. I can zero speed holding down the - key and then hitting the space bar when it reaches zero. But the set speed stays the same. Eg: 259 or 407 or higher multiples of IDS x1.
It's probably something simple, but I would really like to throttle down to zero.

You still have your IDS (Inertial Dampening System) on while being docked. So in actuality your throttle is still open but your ship is being held in place by the station's Docking Tractor Beam.
Disengage the IDS by hitting your space bar (this will change your flight mode to 'Inertial' and cancel the IDS) or cut your engines by hitting your backspace key. This will set your forward speed back to 0.

Does the stick have a throttle control on it? and if so can you program the throttle on the stick?
My guess is that the setting of the throttle on the stick needs calibrating to be set at zero where you want it to be zero or the straffe buttons programmed on your stick might be stuck. I have that some times happen to me with my X52 Stick!.....

Ya, check the controller settings in the options menu, in-game. Look at page 3, towards to bottom of the page. There will be two line-items, IDS increase and IDS decrease, for your selection of keys to bind to. I use the F11 and F12 keys for these two button options, as they are not currently being used for other in-game hot keys. It helps, a lot! Also have my throttle control bound to the toggle of my Logitech Extrm 3D Pro schtick. This enables the Zero to Hero speeds! This throttle control option can also be found on the joystick control options, same menu - some navigation required.

The same thing happens when I use my X52. I just got into the habit of accelerating and decelerating to reset it.From post: 122710, Topic: tid=8286, author=DORN wrote: Keyboard and stick.
I am thinking that I may have unknowingly changed a key setting or something.
I will try setting things back to default.

Well...
Thank you for all of the suggestions but it is still a mystery to me.
After trying everything I can think of, including reinstalling. I just have some weird stuff going on.
1. After reinstalling, if I try to change the control config from Options at the beginning, the changes are not saved when I launch.
2. I can change control config and get the set speed and speed controls to start at zero and work correctly only if I go into Options after I have loaded a pilot and launched.
When I go into Options in either case I am only seeing an exit button. Is there a save and exit button somewhere on that screen that maybe is hidden from me?

When you are in the Options menu and you then enter the Configure Controls Menu, Then in the Configure Controls menu there is only the Exit button because that is the control test screen and you can not make any changes. Now if in the Configure Controls Menu you choose "click here to configure joystick axis controls" or "click here to configure keyboard and button controls" in those options there is a Save and Exit button because there is where you make the changes in. You probably might have a button keyboard conflict regarding the throtlle. Check the Keyboard button asignments and make sure there are no conflicts!. And you are right that you can only get to the Options Menu by loading a pilot profile!......Hopes this helps!......

I am not seeing a save and exit button on the joystick axes configuration page.
And although I make axes changes, they do not hold.
I do see the save and exit button on the keyboard config page.
I also tried first changing the axes, exiting by the only button visible and then going to the keyboard config and saving and exiting there, thinking that that one save and exit button might save both the axes and the keyboard changes. But it didn't work. The axes still do not save.

The axis bindings will save upon finishing the mapping process and then clicking on the '< Verify controls, then click here to save >' option that appears at the end. If you don't click on that option as the last step, the settings won't be saved.

For what is is worth,
.....I found that the set speed reset to MAX acceleration problem is being caused by the stick controller I have, which is a Logitech Freedpm 2.4 cordless stick. If you don't use or move the stick or press a button for a few minutes, the battery power shuts off. The EM detects this and resets the velocity to Max which can then only be reset by going into Configureation.
Hmmmnnnn... Time to get an X- 52.
