Better than Elite and X games?

Havent got this game myself but keeep looking at it from time to time and thinking it looks quite intersting as space sims are my favourite type of PC game.

I loved Elite Frontier and First Encounters especiallty the sense of travelling through space, landing on worlds, combat, lots of varied missions not all combat related etc. And I hated the X games for pretty much the same reasons - no planet landing, no sense of travelling through space, every sector the same, combat was terrible, very limited gameplay.

So the question is should I get this game - is it really worth it. What game is it like most? If I hated X will I hate this one???

I am downloading the demo of Merc as I type but thought I would ask as well to see what people really feel on here. What are the biggest problems in the game to date??? There are always some.

Hi nats.

I can truly recommend this sim as the best I've ever played.

I come from Freelancer and this sim is much more freedom. There is only 1 quest (IMG) and there
is no need of doing it, but it's design to teach you a lot of aspects of the game.

All else is up to YOU!;) Total freedom, enter atmosphere and fly/dock on planets.
Mining, trading, contracts, fighting ...

Lots of ships to choose from, both Military and Civilian types.
You can configure every ship just as you like it.

MP is great and you can link 2 ships together were 1 is pilot and the other gunner.
Great fun when fighting lots of foe's.

Best space simulation and trading game in SOL system...

No need to use jump gates, no loading screens, total freedom!

Best space ship feeling and best dog fights, Mp is awesome for free!

If your favorite game genre is space sim games, don't miss it!

The only problems are: Loss of any social life. Kids, and wife go a bit hungry, now and then - you consider anyone who doesn't know how to autojump to Sol an idiot - lack of sleep, and personal hygiene - your clan becomes more important than your family. Aside from that, no problems.

Although this game is very good, for me it's not the best space sim I ever played.

The Wing Commander series and the Freespace series games rank above this game, at least in my humble opinion.

The best PvP based space sim I ever played was Freespace 2 Squadwars, an entire challenge system linked to the game via a website where squadrons from all over the world competed for control of the most out of the 68 star systems in the Freespace universe.

As for a "sandbox" type of space sim, this one is the best, although it needs improvment when it comes to clan war.
